Fallen King: sketch by MoPotter Fallen King: sketch by MoPotter
Okay it's a bit late, but better late than never, right?? I would like anyone who cares to, to critique this to your heart's content!! That being said, this is only a sketch, and I will be using the critique to help me add detail and make corrections on the final sketch that I will be turning into lineart and then a full-color watercolor painting!!
I know it's only a sketch, but please don't be too harsh- however I do still want constructive criticism and any ideas/suggestion you might have for the bg/furture coloring, perspective, etc. Thanks in advance if anyone helps me out!!

And this is kind of random, but I just wanted to thank everyone for the views and favs!! It's only 65 favs, but the fact that something of mine other than fanart has actually gotten this much attention makes me feel all awesome and fuzzy inside :love:

Sooo this is my latest project!!
I've been watching the Code Geass anime and I quite like it so far! I dunno why, but the "chess" theme got stuck in my head yesterday and I had the inspiration to draw this. Characters representing chess pieces.
This is the "King"! The fallen king, anyways, reaching out for his "Queen" ;D
I'm actually quite proud of this- the pose and the outfit! Which you can barely see any of here, but I'm planning on doing another picture with him that will show the whole thing :XD:
The bg isn't done {obviously} I just needed to fill space!

I know the perspective on the ground is kinda off and trippy, but I'll fix it later. The purpose this sketch really serves is for my question to you all:
I want to color {a cleaner version of} this, so which way do you think I should do it- digital or traditional {watercolors}??
There are pros and cons for both, but which would you guys prefer to see it in :?

Inspiration from Code Geass and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone;
Reference {which was difficult to achieve on my own} was originally a picture I took of myself so I have no one to credit ;p

I no longer have to slave over portrait/reliasm drawings, so I decided to draw something I wanted to before I start school again on Monday and get cracking on my Art I Owe People List ;p

It looks good, i really need to learn how to crosshatch better, i hate it cause it always looks weird to me when i do it but it looks great on yours.

I know I am so late it's almost stupid, but I have now decided to actually comment on this thing.

I like your attempt to put some perspective on the pic, but it could be better, as you said XD I like this version better than the actual colored version that you updated with... because this one gives it more space in the back and makes it seem like the bad guys have left him for dead (wherever they are IF THEY'RE THERE >.>). The one with color makes it seem like the bad guys are in the background just laughing at him and my impression was that they were leaving through the door? XDD omg I have no idea.
Also I know his hands are supposed to be big because they're closer to the viewer, but that doesn't mean they should be the same size necessarily ;u; So I think the second hand farther back should be smaller.

Other than that, I believe I totally missed the theme for this piece so ALL IN ALL YOU MAY IGNORE. I just read your artist's comments and I was like "waitwoah he's reaching for the queen? fffff i didn't know." Shows how much I know about chess.

It's fine!! {P.S. have you seen your kiriban prize in my gallery yet?? ;p}

Hah and I'm still working on it :XD: Damn perspective ;p And originally I was going to have other chess pieces in the bg but I was too lazy to draw them in this {and couldn't remember what they looked like xD} but I like your theory about having left him for dead....but also in the colored version if I do have them there like I originally intended, it was like the red/black team was losing and the white team is waiting to check mate/kill the king! {if you do know anything about chess *__*}
AND YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY I AM SOMEBODY ACTUALLY MENTIONED THIS!! I kept on wondering if it was just me, that the hands are too similar in size, but I guess not after all!! :D I will change the right hand to make it smaller :3

Hah and the most essential piece in any chess game is the Queen, {a bit opposite to the usual, right? ;p} and the King is about to be taken {"killed" in this artwork, having just lost the game} so he wants to have his Queen in death? Maybe :? Hah I would ignore me because some of my ideas get crazy out of hand xP
But thanks again for the review!!

So all in all, this apparently would make more sense if I knew more about chess! XDDD I'm sure if I knew the role of the Queen better I would have gotten it at first, but thanks for explaining 8D

LOOL yeah I noticed the hand thing because he just seemed like the skinniest little guy, and his hands looks really big in comparison so XD

Hah...probably ;p Basically, the King is limited to moving 1 space at a time. Castle/Rooks can only move horizontal or vertical, Bishops go diagonally, knight move in a specific L-shape ;p Basically, the Queen can move in any direction, however many spaces she wants and that's what makes her the most valuable!

And yeah :XD It does look super weird now that I look at it ;p If you wanna see it fixed, here it is! [link]
